We had a debate today in class, I was dreading it the whole day. It got so bad that I had to pray before leaving to get through it. I do NOT do well in debates, and it wasn’t so much as the speaking publicly that got me on edge, but the actual debating of a point and the fact that I’m more laid back than what is normally expected of people in a debate. All through it, I kept thinking that what I would have to say would somehow be irrelevant to the topic at hand and someone would look at me with dull eyes and basically tell me I was stupid or something like that. Now, in the past I wouldn’t have said anything and let my group or the side I was on speak, but I did say SOMETHING (although I didn’t quite get it out right the first time which was embarrassing).
Oh, forgot. I should probably tell you what the debate was about.
We read Susan Orlean’s “The Orchid Thief” about John LaRoche after he stole a bunch of orchids from the Fakahatchee strand in Florida. We also watched the movie “Adaptation” about Charlie Kaufman and what he goes through during the time he tries to adapt “The Orchid Thief”. Then, we had to find the central argument of each one and debate on which one conveyed the message in a better way.
I thought both were boring. The book was more boring than the movie, but I thought the movie was a bit wacky in some places — *cough* the end *cough*. However, I could say more stuff about the movie. Maybe I shouldn’t have gone over to the book side. Whatever, It’s too late now since we’re done and my participation grade probably isn’t gonna go up now.
Man, I really wish I didn’t freeze up during debates.
